The Clubhouse Project: Clearing the Land

This was a two to three week process that occurred during outdoor time. Not all children participated every day, but most assisted with the clearing. The children and the teacher discussed cutting the trees low to the ground. Children raked and carried off sticks and rocks. Children used saws to cut down small trees and sprouts. Children carried concrete blocks to the site to become the four corners of the foundation for the building. Alex particularly enjoyed using a level to even-up the concrete blocks. In order to do this children shoveled dirt out from under them and re-adjusted them. Children laid the path using roofing shingles donated by Kyle's mother during the clearing of the land. Since the roofing shingles are loose parts and prone to slippage, the children had discussions about the need for slow and fast signs on the path.
