Offshoot from the Clubhouse Project: Volcano in the Garden Area

Children hauled dirt in a wheelbarrow and buckets to an area in front of the clubhouse in preparation for spring planting. Children requested goggles, sunglasses and hats to keep the dust out of their eyes. They wanted the dirt to be in a mound, much like a volcano, with a long deep hole in the center. They intended to plant around the mound and fill the hole with water predicting that the plants' roots could get a drink from the center of the mound. Small bedding plants and several blankets of wild flowers were placed in the ground. As spring approached, trees regained their leaves and the area became heavily shaded. Consequently, the plants and seeds did not grow very well--a lesson that certain flowers and plants need more light.
